Notes on Light and Air (Shoreline Score) with the LAST Collective

4 Nov – 27 Nov
Jacks Beach Reserve
Victoria, Australia

“Front Beach, Back Beach (FBBB) is a public project presented by Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and Deakin University’s Public Art Commission unfolding across the Peninsula in November. Featuring leading Australian artists, invited to respond to key sites, stories and communities – that have collectively shaped this unique region of Victoria – FBBB aims to delight, beguile and challenge in equal measure. The commissions take many forms, accessible across the month, from sculpture, to performance, film and sound.FBBB

Light Air Space Time (LAST) Collective contributed the site-specific performance-installation Notes on Light and Air (Shoreline Score) to the curated public art festival Front Beach Back Beach, 2022.  This contribution to the festival was curated by David Cross.

Light and Air and Space and Time (LAST) is an artist collective based in Naarm/Melbourne. Beth Arnold, Melanie Irwin, Katie Lee, Clare Rae and Hanna Tai each have independent art practices and come together with shared creative affinities. Each LAST artist is committed to experimental and ephemeral modes of practice, including performance and site-responsivity. Feminist threads run through each practice, evident in the artists’ materials and subject matter, their playful and unapologetic occupation of space, and their sense of humour and the absurd. The works often have a lightness of touch, or a subtlety that blurs the distinction between the artwork and other things.

Each artist contributed notes to the score, such as performance-scores, objects, texts and costumes.  Together we improvised individual and collaborative performances on the site during the festival.  The sculpture was on the site for 1 month.
